Did You Know That…?

-Water covers 70% of the earth's surface. The large majority of this is ocean!

-The chemistry of human blood and ocean water are quite similar.

-The deepest ocean is the Pacific, with an average depth of 4,028 meters. In fact, the deepest part of the Pacific ::the Mariana Trench, which is located between Japan and New Guinea:: is deeper than the earth's highest mountain ::Mt. Everest:: is high. The Mariana Trench is 11,035 meters deep ::36,204 ft or 6.89 miles::, whereas Mt. Everest is 8848 meters high ;:29,028 ft or 5.53 miles:;. . .

-The oceans create approximately 90% of the earth's oxygen. Most of this oxygen is produced by phytoplankton (single celled sea plants)

-From the seashore to the deepest depths, oceans are home to some of the most diverse life on Earth. There are big animals and little ones; long and short ones, multicolored and drab ones, and those that just sit while others that never stop swimming. There are even some organisms that light up.

-Most of the living things in the ocean are in a very small portion near the surface. Nearly all marine life depends directly or indirectly on microscopic algae found only at the ocean surface. Therefore, most of the animals in the ocean live in the sunlit zone or migrate to it in search of food.
